The function of the Oil Seal is to prevent any fluid from leaking from the inside to the outside of the application, between the shaft and the housing. It is also there to prevent any foreign materials such as dirt to enter from the outside inwards.

The oil seal has a dynamic and a static sealing function. The dynamic sealing function is the relationship between the rotating shaft and the seal lips. A garter spring usually used to increase the interference between the seal lip and the shaft. In order to create this interference the seals ID is usually slightly smaller than the shaft OD. The static sealing function is the relationship between the housing and the oil seal. In order to create a sealing interference the OD of the seal is slightly greater than that of the housing.
